What is a Ping Test?
Ping is a basic network diagnostic tool that tests the connectivity between your computer and another host on the internet. It works by sending ICMP Echo Request packets to the target host and waiting for a response.
How to Interpret Ping Results
Metric | Good Value | Interpretation |
---|---|---|
Latency | < 100ms | Lower is better. Below 20ms is excellent, 20-100ms is good, over 100ms may cause noticeable delay. |
Packet Loss | 0% | Any packet loss indicates network issues. 1-2% is concerning, above 5% indicates significant problems. |
Jitter | < 30ms | Variation in ping time. Low jitter (consistent ping times) indicates a stable connection. |
Common Uses for Ping
- Testing if a website or server is online
- Measuring network latency and response times
- Diagnosing connection issues
- Monitoring network reliability
- Testing changes to network configurations
